Rootsweb is both a large collection of family trees that can be very useful in searches and also a large collection of other genealogy information such as Social Security Death Indices, California Death Indices, surname mailing lists and state related information.

Searches at Ancestry.com 
Ancestry.com is the world's largest collection of census records, birth, death and marriage records, public records, military information, etc. Don't forget the family trees and mailing lists. This is a paid subscription service. Check to see if your library has an online version for library card holders

Family Search Internet
The LDS collection of birth, marriage and death records is both user donated and collected by church workers over the years. In addition, in the library records you will find thousands of other records that have not been indexed yet. If you need information about vital statistics at a particular location be sure to check this out.

Genealogybuff
lots of obituaries, and miscellaneous other vital records information

Genweb
Don't forget  Genweb = countries, states, counties, provinces, and large cities have their Genweb site. The link is for the main page. You can also just search  on Genweb followed by state, city, county to find one for the area you are searching. Some of these are excellent some are only token sites. If they have archives be sure and check them out for family and historical information.
